1. Introduction
This document describes the June Canavan Foundation Impact Framework for the second ten-year period of the Foundation (2016-2020).
The JCF Impact Framework is intended to inform potential applicants about the key criteria for grantmaking, and helps ensure that June’s spirit lives on through the Foundation. It may be updated from time to time.
The June Canavan Foundation makes distributions in the form of grants and donations. Decisions are made in accordance with the extent to which the project or organisation seeking a grant or donation is in alignment with the values, vision, mission, focus and geographic areas of the Foundation. These are described in the sections below.
2. The June Canavan Foundation Values
Understanding and articulating June’s values is absolutely core to:
- what the Foundation itself stands for,
- what the individual Directors of the Foundation stand for, and
- what the organisations supported by the Foundation demonstrate.
Our six values underpin our grantmaking decisions.

5. Focus Areas
The June Canavan Foundation has preference for projects that create sustainable outcomes and allow people to help themselves in accordance with the principle of ‘a hand up, not a hand out’.
The focus areas for The June Canavan Foundation are:
- Sport
- Education
- Health
- Conservation
The JCF can also play a valuable role in growing the philanthropic sector, and in being a model and inspiration for other small to medium scale foundations. On this basis, we recently added a fifth focus area:
- Growing Giving
The following descriptions are indicative of where the June Canavan Foundation would like to fund, although not all may be funded during any one year.
5.1 Sport
Initiatives which:
- focus on women’s access to, participation in or positive experience of sport
- provide accessibility to sport to disadvantaged groups
- offer scholarships for students and researchers particularly in the areas of: advancement of sport medicine; and -mental health and post-career support for elite athletes.
5.2 Education
Initiatives which provide:
- Primary, secondary or vocational educational opportunities for those who otherwise would not have the chance for an education
- Tertiary education and professional development scholarships and bursaries for sport leaders and health professionals who, through disadvantage, would not normally have access to such development
- mentoring programs for sport leaders, health professionals and disadvantaged communities.
5.3 Health
Primary health care initiatives which focus on:
- the mental health and wellbeing of athletes
- emergency and crisis medicine
- palliative care
- childhood development and maternal health
- large scale public health issues.
5.4 Conservation
Initiatives which focus on the environmental protection of animals and marine life.
5.5 Growing Giving
Initiatives which build capacity in the philanthropic sector or encourage individuals and groups to commence or expand their planned giving.
Note: projects that have a general health, wellbeing or educative component, but who’s primary focus lies outside of the June Canavan Foundation Giving Framework, will not be considered.
6. Geographical Areas
The Foundation will support projects within Australia in the regions of the Sunshine Coast and North East Victoria. Occasionally it may be relevant to provide support to projects which have a nation-wide impact.
Internationally, the Foundation will support projects in the regions of East Africa and Papua New Guinea.
